ANPR: сapabilities and principles of operation

Last update: 26.12.2025

1. What capabilities does the License Plate Recognition function provide?

Currently, license plate recognition in Ivideon offers access to the following functions:

  • Detection and recognition of license plates captured in the frame.
  • Access to events and video archive for incident analysis.
  • Push notifications about recognition events in web-browser and Ivideon mobile app.
  • Managing recognition lists from your personal account, using the system for ACMS (Access Control Management System)*
  • Obtaining reports on vehicle license plate detection.

2. How does the License Plate Recognition system work in the Ivideon service?

There are two ways to set up the license plate recognition function. Their key differences are described in the table below.

Method 1. Using special camera models with a built-in analytics module.

Method 2. Connecting a special subscription plan (Cloud ANPR) to any camera without a built-in analytics module.

How it works

License plate is recognized by the camera itself, while Ivideon software retrieves this data into the service.

License plate is recognized in Ivideon cloud by videoanalytics system.

Opening a gate when a plate is recognized

Supported

Partially supported. (This option is only available for cameras with relay outputs.)

Recognition without internet connection

Supported. However, the events from the period without internet will not be uploaded to the cloud.

Not supported.

Opening a gate without internet connection

Yes, if license plates were synchronized with the camera.

Not supported.

In both cases, the obtained recognition results are then presented in the personal account and can be exported as reports.

3. Is one camera enough to calculate the time spent on the territory?

  • For сloud-based recognition: This feature is not yet supported but will be available in the near future. One camera will be sufficient for its operation.
  • For cameras with a built-in ANPR module: These cameras can recognize the direction of movement. The time spent on the territory is calculated as the difference between entry and exit times, and one camera is sufficient.

4. Can an ANPR camera simultaneously recognize faces, count visitors, etc.?

No, it can only recognize license plates.

5. How many cameras need to be installed to open gates based on ANPR?

If you need the gates to be opened when a license plate is recognized - you will need two cameras installed on different sides of the gate.
However, if gates need to be opened for any exiting vehicle — only one camera (for entry) is required.

6. Will the camera recognize license plates in the dark, in the rain?

Yes, if the cameras have high sensor sensitivity and an IR function. However, if additional lighting is installed — the image quality will be higher.

7. Which countries' license plates can be recognized?

Currently, plates from the following countries are supported: Turkey, Croatia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Hungary, Greece, Poland, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Palestine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Albania, Kosovo, Belarus, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden.

8. How long is ANPR data stored?

License plate recognition events are stored within the service for 90 days from the moment of generation.

9. Does removing a plate from the list delete its recognition history?

No, removing a plate from the list does not lead to the deletion of its recognition events.

10. What's the maximum speed for license plate recognition?

License plates will be correctly recognized at vehicle speeds up to 60 km/h (regardless of the license plate recognition method used). At higher speeds, recognition is possible but not guaranteed.
